Abstract This study was a quasi-experimental study, aimed to develop the body image of the adolescent girls leading to improving their self-esteem, a counseling program as nursing intervention to improve their body image and self-esteem. The study was conducted in two settings; Alnoor and Hosam Eldeen private preparatory schools in the biggest Cairo. The study involved 145 adolescent female students at third year of preparatory schools; 15 from the first school represented the pilot study sample, and 130 students, all available students in the three classes of the second school divided into 3 groups. Tools of the study involved, a self-administered Questionnaire to measure sociodemographic characteristics, Body image test for healthy individuals to measure body image before and after intervention, and Coopersmith Self-esteem Inventory (to measure self esteem before and after intervention). The main results showed that, the body image and self esteem are dramatically improved after the intervention with highly statistically significant differences. There was a reverse relation between age, Body Mass Index (BMI) and good body image, while there was a parallel relation between high self esteem and good body image among adolescent girls before and after the intervention. The results revealed also the decrease of age and BMI of adolescent girls, and the increase of high self esteem before and after the intervention. It was recommended that changing pubertal status, and the different effects on female students, must be taken into account in planning educational programs in schools. Psychosocial counseling sessions for social workers, teachers and community mental health nurses who are working in the schools to teach them the physiological and psychological changes and to help their students how to face these problems. It is more useful to generalize counseling programs to improve body image among adolescent girls especially in early adolescence.
