Abstract This study was carried out to assess and compare the correlation between masticatory muscles size and activity in different facial morphology. Forty-eight Egyptian subjects, males and females, adolescent between ages 13-19 years, enrolled for treatment at orthodontic department of Ain Shams University was included in this study. The cephalograms and other pretreatment records (i.e., extraoral and intraoral photographs and patient histories) were visually evaluated and classified as belonging to one of three groups: normal, vertical and horizontal growing groups, after that cephalograms of each individual traced and analyzed by four linear ratios (in percentage) and nine angular measurements for final categorization of the subjects. According to that total number of subject was divided into three equal groups, normal group (n=16), vertically growing group (n=16) and horizontally growing group (n=16). Each group subdivided into two subgroups male and female with equal’s number in each one (n=8). Each subjects was examined with surface electromyograph and ultrasound imaging system regarding there masticatory muscles (superfacial masseter and anterior temporalis) activity and thickness respectively. Data obtained from these variables (electromyograph and ultrasound) were collected and tabulated to assess and compare the correlation between masticatory muscles size and activity in different facial morphology. |
