Abstract

The one off fabrication industries and shipbuilding in particular require the bending of plates accurately to predetermined radii, often with curvature in two directions.
The methods of bending currently used in this range of industries are somewhat imprecise and rely heavly on the manual skill of the operator and based on trail and error technique using equipment not purposely built for double curvature bending. This problem is of considerable importance as inaccuracies in the bent plate due to the springback phenomena and the lack of repeatability of similarly shaped plates lead to complications in the assembly process. Thus, there is a need for an accurate mechanical technique to be developed.
A simplified rig is built with a simple concentrated load is applied on a steel plate., clamped of all edges as a preliminary effect towards the development of multiple variable die.
This research deals with the deformation analysis of a double curvature plate under single acting load taking into consideration the springback phenomena of the material.
A discussion of the experimental results shows that , the importance of this work lies in the determination of the values of the bending loads and the corresponding maximum and net deflections which will be used in the special software required to operate the intended machine as initial values.
