Abstract

Grindability is a term used in qualifying the oerformance of the grinding process throughout some principles such as the rate of stock material removal, the grinding ratio, the specific power consumtion and the state of ground
surface when the economy aspect is regarded.
The difficulty in assessing such concept is amater of comprehension of the characters and the behaviour which are correlated to the grinnding process itself.
This work aims to evaluate some quantitative rates for the grindabilty definitionwhich can be achived by propsing a scratching system simulating the granding process.
There are tow different approachs in this modelling , namely a test uses slow scratching speed (static scratching) and the other is conducted under the normal high grinding speed (dynamic scratching).
The former test has been devoted to study the effect of the workpiece material properties.
The cutter details and the normal load on the efficiency of the scratching action .
While the dynamic scratching model explored the influence of the cutting forces and velocity on this efficiency. Both of the scrachability criterion ”width per Depth” (2a/d)and (B) are used to evaluate the performance of the wearing process.
The statc scratching test was performed in two ways; the single track and the multi-tracks.
The value of (B) for the dynamic scratching model has been extended to use as a grindabilty index (G1).
The cutting forces ; tangentail and norml; which engaged in the dynmic scratching test have been monitored. An increment behaviours are noted with the increase of the material softening and material hardenin.
This matter could be referred to the prevalence of grit scratching resistance in low hardened materials, but the penetrative cutter resistance is more appreciable with the hard materials .Generally, the former wearing resistance mode has more deminstrative effect on the trend of the cutting forces. The grinding coefficient(U) is develped to be used as a grindabilty index (GI).
The improvement in the performance of the griding system is related to (U).
The study provokes to adopt the grindabilty index (GI) which based on the scratching efficiency (B) in the gringing system of priority the rapid rate of the material grooving and the grinding ratio .
Meanwhile, it is advised to consider the other (GI)when the specific power consumption comes in the first rank
in estimation the performance of the grinding process.
