Abstract The Thesis comprises three main chapters: Chapter I: Introduction Deals with a literature survey on the reaction of molecular dioxygen with copper containing compounds and its applications in biological, catalytic and synthetic processes. Chapter 11: Experimental Includes the materials used in this study, the methods of synthesis of [(PiP)nCuX]4 and [(PiP)nCuX]402 complexes; Pip = piperidine, n = 1 or 2 and X = Cl, Br or I, the methods of synthesis of [(PiP)nCuX]4 Cat, and [(PiP)nCuX]4 CatO, complexes; n = 1 or 2, X = Cl or Br and Cat = 3,4,5,6- tetrachlorocatecholato ligand and the methods of synthesis of [FerCuCI]4, [FerCuClk02, [FerCuClkCat2 and [FerCuCI]4CatO; Fer = N,N-dimethylaminomethyl ferrocene. The different instruments such as electronic spectra, infrared spectra, EPR and redox measurements utilized in these studies and the methods of analyses are reported. Chapter Ill: Results and Discussion The third chapter consists of three parts: 1- The first part includes the stoichiometry and products of oxidation of copper (I) complexes of [(PiP)nCuX]4 by dioxygen in aprotic media: a- The analytical and cryoscopic data, Table (Il.I), establish the formation of discrete tetranuclear products. b- The full three-dimensional molecular geometry of [PipCuI]4 was determined, showing a tetrameric molecule. |
