Abstract

In almost every country, the proportion of people aged over 60 years is growing faster than any other age group, because of longer life expectancy. Elder abuse is not a universally accepted term and some have used the terms “inadequate care” and “elder mistreatment”. However elder abuse is defined as intentional actions that cause harm or create a serious risk of harm (whether or not harm is intended), to a vulnerable elder by a caregiver or other person who stands in a trusted relationship to the elder. Elder abuse is now recognized internationally as a pervasive and growing problem, meriting the attention of clinicians who provide medical care for old people, as well as the general public. For example, a recent WHO report about violence and health prominently featured elder abuse and highlighted the range of harmful activities covered by this term throughout the world (WHO 2010).
The National Center on Elder Abuse defines seven different types of elder abuse: physical abuse; sexual abuse; emotional abuse financial exploitation; neglect; abandonment; and self neglect National Center on Elder Abuse, 2007).
So this study aimed to To improve the geriatric health status, to achieve better quality of life and to help early detection of elderly abuse through:
1-Study the prevalence of abuse among the geriatric.
2- Determine the types of the elder abuse and risk factors of the abuse.
Procedure of the study Cross – sectional study was conducted in the out patient clinic of the family health unit of (meet – rady village). The study was conducted on one hundred persons who were registered in the family files of the family health unit during the period of the study.
All the studied persons were subjected to
1- Evaluation and history taking for study their demographic and socio economic data.
2- Assessment of their quality of life and life study
3- Assessment for their exposure to abuse and type of abuse
4-Clinical examination, psychiatric history and examination for detection of any psychiatric disorders according to DMS IV criteria The study revealed the following results:
1- The prevalence of the elderly abuse among studied persons was
23%.
2- Physical and verbal abuse 10%
3- Psychological and emotional abuse was 11%
4- Financial and medical abuse was 16%.
5- Negliciance was 23%.
6- Referral to the diagnostic tool for assessment of the abuse which considered any type of elderly abuse as a shape of neglicance.
7- Negliciance and financial abuse were the most common types of the abuse among them
8- Elderly abuse significantly increase among people with low socio economic conditions.
9- The prevalence of quality of life affection was higher among the group with abuse than the group with no abuse as the prevalence of bad QOL is 33% and the prevalence of good quality of life is 67%.
