Abstract

Many studies have been directed toward elucidation of the mode-of- action of chemosterilants. In spite of these efforts, little progress has been made, and the molecular basis of sterilization has not been established. In fact, studying the mechanism-of-action of these biologically active materials is extremely difficult, requiring extensive study and experimentation. However,, knowing the mode-of-action of such known chemosterilants would greatly facilitate the successful application. of the sterile- male concept of insect eradication with chemicals.
Since a wide variety of chemicals can interfere with the function or metabolism of nucleic acids and protein synthesis, it was interesting to look at the various possibilities for chemosterilants as chemicals interfering with such an important biological site. This study includes the following areas associated dth oogenesis and embryogenesis of the adult house fly (Musca domestica Is.).
1 - Synthesis of nucleic acids, nucleic acids profiles and the base ratios of nucleot ides of ENA.
2 - Ribosomes, r-RNA, base composition of r-RNA nucleotides and ribosomal protein synthesis.
5 - Protein synthesis including various enzymes.
ii. - Measurement of the activities of crude and purified dehydrogenasec and• esterases.
5 — Electrophorctic patterns of haemolymph, ovaries, and eggs proteins.
6 — Isozyme oattcrns of dehydrogenases and esterases.
