Abstract

In young hearing impaired children, early intervention is considered to be of utmost importance for speech and language development. There is little research evidence as to the role that parents actually play in support of their child’s development, although all researchers would agree that the role of the parent is critical. The presence of a child with hearing loss puts significant pressures on the family with hearing parents and can be a continuous source of potential stress.
Researchers have found that parent training programs have consistent and persistent influence on both parental behavior and the intellectual develop¬ment of the young child. Training pro¬gram participants express more confi¬dence and satisfaction with parenting. However, there are a number of English language kits and manuals for practice of auditory training have been designed for enabling parents to improve auditory skills of children with hearing impairment. In Egypt there are very limited materials. Hence, the need to develop an Arabic material appropriate for Egyptian culture in the form of Arabic language parent guide booklet was emerged.
In this study a prototype of parent guide booklet had been developed for optimizing auditory skills of hearing impaired children in Arabic language appropriate for the needs of children with different degrees of peripheral hearing loss fitted with hearing aid.
Booklet entails introduction describing parent’s first reaction towards discovery of hearing loss and how to cope with their grief sensation, through elaboration of a child character and family to be used all through the booklet. The guide divided into three main sections the first section; Parents instruction to deal with the hearing impaired children to improve communication and socialization, second section; Parents instruction to integrate listening into daily activities while the third section is five training daily activities organized according to the stages of auditory skills development.
Parent’s image to the developed booklet was addressed using a developed questionnaire which is divided according to the three sections of the parent guide asking about the ability of parents to apply its sections. While the efficacy of the parent guide to improve auditory skills after one month duration has been assessed on 20 Egyptian children ranging age from 3-8 years with different degrees of hearing loss by re-evaluation of aided performance.
Results of the present study reflected the effectiveness of parent participation in the rehabilitation process. It supports the utility of parent guide booklet as it seeks a prototype parent’s program to improve auditory skills of their hearing impaired children. It had good internal consistency and average correlation of items in each section that gauge its reliability. There was slightly statistically significant improvement in binural aided discrimination score and total score of Meaningful Auditory Integration Scale (MAIS). Also, significant correlation was demonstrated between this improvement and parent’s ability to apply most of different instructions and training activity.
