Abstract Aim of the work Water pollution is one of the most serious environmental problems facing modern society. Industrial waste constitutes the major source of heavy metals pollution. Heavy metals in the wastewater are major threat to human being and environment due to their toxicity. Many research efforts are devoted to extract metal ions from their solutions. Several methods such as chemical precipitation, solvent extraction, ultra filteration, ion exchange and adsorption have been described for the removal of heavy metals from aqueous solutions. Nowadays chelating resins are increasingly used in the removal of metal ions due to their high adsorption capacities, selectivity and durability. Biopolymers have recently studied as support materials for different chelating agents. They are characterized by low cost and nontoxic nature. Among these biopolymers, cellulose has high chemical and mechanical stability. In the present work, modified cellulose will be obtained through immobilization with some chelating agents. The modified cellulose obtained will be studied towards the removal of some pollutants such as heavy metals from aqueous solutions. The program of study can be outlined as follows:- 1. Literature survey on the subject of study. 2. Immobilization of cellulose with different chelating agents. 3. characterization of the modified cellulose adsorbents obtained by different analytical and spectral methods. |
