Abstract

Schistosomiasis is considered as one of the most serious parasitic diseases of man. It represents a great problem in tropical and subtropical areas. More than 0O millions are infected worldwide, while more than 400 millions are at risk (WJ:iO,
1980). The disease headed the list of communicable diseases in Egypt both as regard its prevalence, gravity and its great repercussion on the national economy of our country (Mousa, 1976).
The three species of schistosomes commonly affecting man, S. haematobium, S. mansoni and 3. japonicurn are similar in their basic life cycle, their pathologic effects on mammalian host tissues, yet they differ in their external and internal morphology of adults, the shape of their eggs and larvae hatching from the eggs, in the groups of snails which they utilize as inter— mediate hosts and in the mammalian nost susceptibility (Faust and Russell, 1974),
Investigations conducted with mice experimentally infected with S. mansoni revealed that the course of infection, location of worms, the egg distribution, the immunological response and the development of lesions in various organs closely resemble those observed in man (El—Gamal et al., 1972 and Cohen, 1974).
