Abstract

Gamma rays have a wide spread range of applications in
~ .
different fields of science. As an example: thelstudy of nuclear
structure, the identification of radio-isotopes and their intensities,
estimating the absorbed doses and the determination of interaction
cross-sections where gamma rays are either incident or out going from
the reaction. Therefore, gamma ray spectroscopy is very important
factor and has to be determined with high accuracy.
This work is concerned with the high accurate measurement and
identification of a gamma spectrum using a NaI scintillation detector.
This has been achieved by one of ways. It is devoted to the
experimental technique, where, methods of detection and recording
systems are discussed. Interactions of the gamma rays in the detector
and the resulting deposited energy within was given.
The main part of this thesis is concerned with what are termed
the detector efficiencies- important factors necessary to be determined
in advance. These efficiencies are so-called as: the intrinsic Cl and
total efficiency cr, where, the whole resulting spectrum from a
detector is to be considered- or otherwise the intrinsic peak efficiency
GIp and the full energy peak( or simply the photopeak ) efficiency C p ,
where, considerations are limited to the peak of a resulting spectrum
being formed when monoenergetic gamma rays are incident on the
considered detector.
Different methods are usually to be followed in order to
determine the detector’s efficiencies.
