Abstract The popliteal artery by virtue of its ligamentous fixiation ,anatomic relationship to the femur , tibial plateau and knee joint apparatus ,is uniquely susceptible to injury with blunt extremity trauma. (2) Although the management of vascular trauma has undergone considerable refinement during the past 20 years, popliteal artery injury continues to challenge surgeons and still result in extremely high rate of amputations or functional limb deficits. (3) In this study careful analysis of patients treated at Minia university hospital for popliteal artery injury with or without musculo-skeletal injuries proved that this type of injury is very critical and appears to be a great challenge to the treating physicians. The retrospective part of this study showed the common age of affection is between twenty and forty years 0Id(50%) and it occurs mainly in males (75%). The mechanism of injury varied between road traffic accident (30%),firearm injury (40%) and penetrating sharp object (30%), isolated vessel injury was evident in (60%) of cases while vessel injury associated with musculo- skeletal injury was evident in (40%). The results of the study showed that popliteal artery was solely injured in (40%) of cases while popliteal artery and vein were both injured in (20%) of cases, posterior knee dislocation was evident in (15%) of cases while fracture tibial plateau occurred in (10%) of cases and fracture femur in (15%). |
