Abstract

Ten Patients having velopharyngeal insufficiency (VPI) after cleft palate (CP) repair 5 males, 5 females, age ranged from 9 to 30 years, age mean 20.1) (six bilateral cleft lip and palate (BLCLP) and four unilateral cleft lip and palate (ULCLP) were selected from the Cleft Care Clinic affiliated to the Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Department, Faculty of Dentistry, Ain Shams University. Their speech was characterized by nasal emission of air and hypernasality. Speech aid prosthesis (SAP) was fabricated to each patient as appropriate to his condition. The speech aid prosthesis was constructed for each patient with bulb height 20 mm with the mean depth of the bulb below the designated plane was 7 mm about one third the height of the bulb
The speech quality was assessed using: Auditory perceptual assessment (APA) and Nasometer. Perceptual assessment by phoniatrician correlated well with nasometer scores.
Another speech assessment was carried out after reduction of the half of the bulb height above the reference plane drawn from the anterior tubercle of the Atlas vertebra to the anterior nasal spine (one third the distance from the superior to inferior point). The removal of the acrylic was done from superior surface.
