Abstract The rotavirus vaccine RV1 (Rotarix; GlaxoSmithKline, Genval, Belgium) is a monovalent vaccine composed of an attenuated human rotavirus strain G1P. This parent strain was isolated during a clinical trial of an early rotavirus vaccine in 1988 (Dennehy, 2008). This study was conducted to study the prevalence of the common side effects of ROTARIX vaccine and its implication on parents’ satisfaction in Egypt during the period from February 2009 till October 2010, through a questionnaire answered by the parents to follow up vaccinated infants and children and to know parents’ opinion about the vaccine. It was found that the most prevalent side effects were gastrointestinal side effects (loss of appetite, vomiting and regurgitation) and irritability. And these were noticed to be more in preterm babies, age 6-21 weeks and bottle fed infants and children. Only 5% of the participated parents approved the price of the vaccine while 10 out of the 95% who argued about the price didn’t come back for the next dose of vaccination. Only 8% of the parents accepted the age limit of Rotarix vaccination. And 88 % of the parents accepted the route of Rotarix vaccination as being oral |
