Abstract Peptic ulcer disease is a problem of the gastrointestinal tract characterized by mucosal damage secondary to pepsin and gastric acid secretion. Most ulcers occur in the stomach and proximal duodenum. The most common cause of such damage is infection of the stomach by bacteria called Helicobacter pylori. Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) is the second most common cause of ulcers. The patho-physiology of peptic disease is attributed to the imbalance between the aggressive factors and the local mucosa defenses.Diagnosis of the peptic ulcer include clinical diagnosis, diagnosis of the ulcer by radiology and endoscopy, and diagnosis of the cause.Treatment include preventing the occurrence of ulcer, curative stage and rehabilitation stage. Milestones in the treatment have included The discovery of H2-receptor blockers ,the development of PPIs and confirmation of H. pylori as a peptic ulcer causative agent |
