Abstract

Power quality becomes one of the most important issues for electrical utilities as well as users, especially after the widely use of recent technologies that depend on power electronic devices which are sensitive for power quality problems while they are accounted as a power pollutant source, because of their nonlinearity characteristics.
Nubaria water treatment plant (1964) and the extension of this plant (2006) in Alexandria water treatment plants has been severely affected by the power quality problems. Six soft starter units for twelve treated water motors (6.6 kV, 3 phase, 365 kW, each) in the extension plant have stopped in similar conditions. In addition, Nubaria water treatment plant and the extension plant have been subjected to power factor penalty from El Beheira Electrical Distribution Company, despite two power factor correction units are globally connected to the old plants distributor.
These incidents prompt Alexandria water treatment plants to appeal El Beheira Electrical Distribution Company and Egyptian Engineering Power Systems Company to make power quality assessment for Nubaria water treatment plant and the extension plant. El Beheira Electrical Distribution Company chose seven target points in the plant to take the measurements (Average value of the three phase voltages, RMS value or average value of the three phase currents, three phase power factor values or the average value of the three phase power factor, three phase current total harmonic distortion values, three phase voltage total harmonic distortion values, active power, reactive power, and apparent power). Egyptian Engineering Power Systems Company chose five target points in the plant to take the measurements (Phase RMS values of the three phase voltages, phase RMS values of the three phase currents, three phase power factor values, active power, reactive power, and apparent power). The assessments concluded that a permanent over voltage was recorded, besides poor power factor.
This report intends to analyze the results of the assessments, to fmd out the reasons of the incidents and figure out recommendations for future work.
