Abstract

Heat transfer in melting o.f wax in a vertical cylinder is a fertile area o.f research where a let o.f scientist and researcher gives a let o.f care. The thesis co.nsists o.f five chapter where intro.ductio.n, literature survey, numerical mo.del, results and co.nclusio.n are presented. The first chapter co.ntains intro.ductio.n that illustrate the field o.f thermal energy sto.rage , its impo.rtance and applicatio.n. As thermal energy sto.rage can be considered as so.lutio.n fer intermittent supply o.f so.lar energy which help to. use so.lar energy as an alternative to. co.nventio.nal so.urce o.f energy in heating pro.cess. The seco.nd chapter co.ntains a literature survey fer the previo.us researcher wo.rks published in internatio.nal jo.urnal. The third chapter co.ntains the numerical metho.d used in the thesis where co.ntinuity, mo.mentum and energy equatio.n used to. solve the pro.blem were presented. In fo.urth chapter the results o.f three different mo.del were investigated, o.ne o.f them did net mo.del the vo.lumetric expansio.n o.f wax during melting, an average value o.f actual so.lid and liquid density was used as a mo.del density fer liquid and so.lid like mo.st previo.us wo.rk make. The seco.nd to.o.k the real so.lid density o.f wax as constant value o.f density fer so.lid and liquid density during melting. The last mo.del to.o.k the vo.lumetric expansio.n o.f wax during melting into. acco.unt by using the actual values o.f liquid and so.lid density. First there was a validatio.n o.f the mo.del with previo.us experimental results then a co.mpariso.n is do.ne between the three appro.ach using CFD pro.gram. The co.mpariso.n was made fer co.nstant mass o.f wax and fer different type o.f Heating pro.cess. The po.ints o.f co.mpariso.n have sho.wn a significant difference between the constant density appro.ach and step change in density during melting. It can be co.ncluded fro.m the results that taking the step change in density during phase change in to. acco.unt is impo.rtant as it gives significant difference in behavio.r o.f melting in so. me cases.
