Abstract
The metabolic syndrome (MetS) is highly prevalent in populations around the world (Ford, 2004).
Components often included in definitions of this syndrome are obesity (generally abdominal obesity), high blood pressure, dyslipidemia (hypertriglyceridemia or low high-density lipoprotein cholesterol), and hyperglycemia (Ford, 2005).
People with the MetS are at increased risk for developing diabetes mellitus (DM) and cardiovascular diseases as well as increased mortality from cardiovascular diseases (Isomaa et al., 2001).
