Abstract

Lipoprotein (a) [Lp(a)] is a low densiy lipoprotein (LDL) particle which has an additional protein apo (a) The protein moity of Lp(a) consists of apolipoprotein (a) and apo B-100, probably of a molar ratio of 1, linked via one disulfide bridge Metabolic studies have shown that Lp(a) is not a product derived from other lipoprotein B containing particles, but probably is secreted by the liver as a distinct mature lipoprotein (Krempler et a!., 1979).
Clinical interest in this lipoprotein has been aroused in that it may be an independent riskfactor for atherosclerosis , genetically determined high concentrations of Lp(a) have been strongly associated with premature cardiovascular disease (Dahleii et at, 1986,),myocardial infarction and cerebrovascular disease (Murai et a!., 1986,).
As reduced Lp(a) levels have been found recently in chronic liver disease patients Yamashiro et at, U987,) aid Feely et aI.,(’1992,), we shall study Lp(a) together with serum lipids (cholesterol and triglyceride), lipoprotein. profile (high density lipoprotein-cholesterol and low density lipoprotein—cholesterol ) in chronic liver disease patients with different degrees of severity of hepatic affection.
