Abstract

Troughout his novels, more specifically Free Fall, Lord of e Flies and The Spire, William Golding looks at human mdition from the perspective of a traditional Christian oralist, who still counts much on religion, regarding it as a macea for all man’s ills on earth. At the same time, he is a ost-war realist who insists on the primacy of reason, but ]1 looks upon it as finite and limited.
Golding, both conventional moralist and stubborn alist, fervently tries to illustrate that both faith and reason, Ie spiritual and the physical, cannot be held as ontradicting or in clash, as many people may erroneously ssume. Rather, they are in tandem: for he has intended hese two perspectives to be complementary, not ontradictory. Thus, he does his best throughout the lforementioned three novels to bring these seemingly lpposing world-views into coalescence. One is inclined to :laim that he takes upon his shoulders the responsibility of :stablishing some sort of bond, or what he himself calls as a ’bridge”, between them.
