Abstract

The present investigation was conducted at the Experimental Farm, Department of H011iculture as well as the Vegetable and Biochemical Laboratories, Dept. of Horticulture and Agric. Chern., Fac. Agric., El-Minia University to study the propagation, in the fIrst pat1 and yield and its components as well as storage ability of potato as affected by foliar fertilizer in !he second part of the present investigation
.
First Part:
The application of rapid propagation methods in potato production continuous to become more widespread. Some of these techniques are already naving a direct and signifIcant impact on potato production and their use is widespread in both developed and developing countries.
Stem cutting can be applied under the fIeld conditions. The objectives of !he fIrst part of this investigation were as follow:
l. To study the response of three potato cultivars to the pre-cutting conditions.
ieatments on some characters of cv. Diamant.
fo study the effect of pre-cuttings growing conditions and stem cuttings age on some characters of cv. Diamant.
The studied traits were survival percentage, number and weight of
per cutting.
The results of this part of investigation can be summarized as follow: ~urvival percentage was greatly influenced by the mother stock growing conditions. Stocks grown in 24hr a day of dat-kness gave maximum cuttinggmccess percentage_ Thus, cutting from plants of cvs. Alpha, Diamant and
~punta grown under dat-k conditions were able to be transplanted mccessfully to the open fIeld_
Mother plants of cv. Diatnant grown in dark and treated with IBA at 100 ~pm level gave the highest values of survival percentage in most trials.
The . highest values of smvival percentage were obtained from transplanted 70-days old cuttings of cv. Diamant grown under dark and treated with IBA at 100 ppm level.
Number of tubers per cutting was significantly differed among the tested cultivars. However, cuttings from mother plants grown in darkness gave higher number and there was a significant interaction between the cultivars and the stock growing conditions.
A single cutting from Diamant plants grown in darkness conditions and treated with IBA at 100 ppm could produce 3 to 4 small tubers which could be planted easily to produce seed-tubers.
The highest tuber numbers was obtained when stem cuttings were taken from mother plants grown in dark at age 50 days from planting.
Tuber weight per cutting: Altough, tuber weight is an important factor in potato production under field conditions, number of tubers in the rapid propagation systems is the main target in potato-seed production. Higher yield was recorded when cuttings taken from mother plants grown in darkness conditions were cultivated.
The cuttings produced from mother plants grown under dark conditions treated with 100 ppm IBA gave the highest yield and could be used for elite seed-tuber production.
The second part of this study was conducted to investigate the effect of foliar fertilizers on yield, quality and storage ability of potato.
