Abstract

Latium perenne, 1. (perennial ryegrass) is a cool season turfgrass commonly planted in Egypt. It is used as home lawn, recreational and landscape turf, in addition to controlling erosion, stabilizing dust, abating noise and dissipating heat.
The present study was designed to explore the possibility of growing Latium perenne turfgrass in sandy amended soils rather than clay soil. In addition to reducing the expensive costs and time consumption due to frequent clipping by the application of some growth retardants (cycocel and alar) at different concentrations. Four growing media types were tested, namely, clay, sand, sand + compost at 2 : 1 by volume and sand + clay at 2: 1 by volume. While cycocel and alar were foliar sprayed, three times at four week intervals, at the concentrations of 1000 and 2000 ppm for each one.
The most important results could be summarized in the following paragraphs:
Effect of growing media types:
The three vegetative growth characters, plant height, fresh weight and dry weight, regardless of media types and growth retardant treatments, were gradually reduced from the first clipping and up to the third one, while covering density % took an opposite trend as it was gradually increased due to the frequent cutting as a result of frequent growth retardants application. These observations were identical in the two seasons.
