Abstract

The present investigation was carried out in the two seasons of 1984-1985 and 1985-1986 in the laboratory and greenhouse of Horticulture Department, Faculty of Agriculture, EI-Minia University, EI-Minia Egypt.
The stlCy aimed to investige the effect of snlihity. on veeetative f,rowth, yield componpnts, and chemicnl composition of two veeetable crops i.e. co" ~ "ea and hro" ~ "d bean.
Cov.rpea cvs •. lVita 4 ”, ”T.V.U.15GO ”,”Pur’;n Phnl[\unill and ” Cal ifornia Black Eye No.5”, and " ~ ".roa<1 benn cvs.
” Aquadt:..:ce ”,”Kobrosy It, ”Balady Giza 2 ”,” master” and” Bunyard’s Exhibition” were used in this investi-
gation.
A mixture of sodium chloride and calcium chloride ,1:1 by weieht ) was used as a source of salinity. Four levels of salinity i.e. 0.0, 0.5, 1.0 and 1.5 percent of the soil or medium weight were used with both inncubation and greenhouse cowpea experiments, while seven salts levels i.e. 0.0, 0.25, 0.50, 0.75, 1.0, 1.25 nnd I.? percent were used with broad bean experiment" ~ ".
A pot greenhouse experiment was used with both cowpea and broad bean, while inCubation experiment was used with cowpea only.
The re[,ul ts could be summarized as follows :
1- Seed germination, root length, radicle length per plant, secondary roots per plant, rAtio of radicle
length: root length, plant heieht, leaflet number per plant, leaf area, branch number per plant, dry weight for whole plant, number of pods per plant, number of seeds per pod ,nitro" ~ "en, phosphorus, potassium uld magnesium content as oven dry weiGht were decreased with increasing salinity levels and the r€iuction was significant in most of the above mentioned characters.
2- . Both sodium and calcium content (as oven ory weight) were increased with increasing salinity levels.
J- Both cowpea and broad hean varietjcs did not produce any pod at salinity levels higher than 1.0 percent.
4- Cowpea cv. ”Vi ta 4 ” 1;>road bean cv.” Aq\l].aduJL.ee n
showed the minimum reduction in most vegetative growth characters in -comparison with other varieties.
5- Cowpea cvs.” Pusa Phalguni ” and ”California Black Eye No .• 5”and broad bean cv. ” Balady Giza 2 ” showed the minimum reduction in yield components.
