Abstract This study was designed to clarify the clinicopathological effect of Spirulina platensis on alloxan induced diabetic rats. For this purpose 70 male albino rats fed well balanced nutrition were used, rats divided into four groups GI (Control negative), GII (Control Spirulina), GIII (Control diabetic) and GIV (Diabetic and treated with Spirulina). Rats were bled at 0, 7th, 14th, 21st and 28th days, samples were directed to hematological, biochemical and RT- qPCR assay for MDH RNA gene expression. Animals were sacrificed at the end of the experiment, liver, kidney and pancreas were used for histopathological examination. The results in GIII revealed macrocytosis, leucocytosis with neutrophillia and lymphopenia, hyperglycemia, hyperlipidemia. Significant elevations in liver enzymes, BUN and creatinine and reduction in proteins and RT- qPCR assay for MDH RNA gene expression with insignificant changes in GSH. GII exhibited insignificant changes in all parameters except significant increase in GSH. Values of GIV showed improvement in the blood picture, glucose, liver enzymes, kidney functions, lipid and protein profiles, GSH and MDH gene expression if compared with other groups. Histopathological examinations showed severe changes in GIII and improvement in GIV. The previous results clarified the therapeutic benefits of Spirulina on diabetics. |
