Abstract

Leukemia is a group of disorders characterized by the accumulation of malignant white cells in the bone marrow and blood .It is classified into twotypes : acute and chronic leukemias, which are further subdivided into lymphoid or myeloid. Acute leukemia (AL) is a heterogeneous group of neoplasms affecting uncommitted or partially committed hematopojetic stem cells. They are broadly classified into non-lymphoblastic (commonly referred to as myeloid) and lymphoblastic according to the cell of origin whether myeloblast or lymphoblast. Acute myelogenous leukemia (AML) or acute non-lymphoblastic leukemia (ANLL) is a marrow-based colonal malignant disease of hemopoietictissue that arises as a result of somatic mutation in a pluripotential stem cell or a slightly more differentiated progenitor cell. Itis characterized by the proliferation of abnormal leukemic (blast) cells, principally in marrow and impaired production of normal blood cells.
