Abstract

The objective of the present study is to contribute a better understanding of the source rock and hydrocarbon potentiality in the North East offshore Nile Delta-Egypt, which is considered as an important hydrocarbon province in Egypt. In this work we try to understand the geologic and geochemical variations in the Miocene sediments. Two hundred and seventy seven ditch and core samples were analyzed by Rock Eval analyzer to show rapid screen analysis, followed by detailed gas chromatography, burial history and kerogen investigations of these samples. Most of the studied samples have moderate to high total organic carbon content. Kerogen was mixture of type III/II. Petroleum generation potential ranges from poor to very good. The thermal maturity of the studied samples examined by the use of Tmax parameter and kerogen investigation shows that the samples were thermally immature except in some few samples of Sidi Salim and Wakar formations which enter the oil and gas generation zones. Miocene sediments in the study area was found to be derived from mixed marine and terrestrial organic matter.
Our limited contribution was not intended to solve all the problems of the study area in the NE offshore Nile Delta region due to its complexity. So further investigation and detailed biomarker study is needed for more understanding of hydrocarbon potentiality in this area.
