Abstract

Stepping motors have proved to be more attractive in industerial control applications than the previous approach utilizing closed loop DC servomotors. The work presentd in this thesis is the control of a stepping motor by means of a microprocessor because of their ability to do accurate positioning without using any position measurement sensors.
The thesis consists of five chapters, Chapter (1) presents a historical review of stepping motors and their applications and discusses the previous research work in that area.
Chapter (2) mainly discusses the type of stepping motors, and specially the theory and modes of operations of the four phase unipolar with Perament Magnet type.
Chapter (3) Describes the closed loop control and operation of the stepping motor, driving circuits, logic sequencers and the interfacing circuits.
Chapter (4) a program consisting of five modules is given for different modes of operation of the microprocessor based speed control of a stepping motor. Those modules provide the control for the gradually rapid starting and stopping as well as the speed control without any loss of steps.
The results and conclusion and the important model applications on the stepping motors are presented in chapter 5.
