Abstract

Phase separation and microstructural studies on a B203 - BaO — Fe20 glass system are investigated.
The techniques used in the course of this study are mainly Small Angle X-Ray Scattering, as well as Magnetic measurments,
Electron microscopy and Wide Angle X-Ray Diffraction. Smal]. angle x-ray measurments were performed on this
glass system , first, to determine the miscibility boundaries at 600°C and 800°C. Microstructural and particle size studies were also performed on a single composition of 68 B203 — 17 BaO — 15 Fe203 mole %, heat treated at 590°C for different heat treatment times. In the early stages of phase separation, Small Angle X-Ray Scattering C SAXS ) revealed the presence of a single sized particle present as the inhomogeneity in the heat treated glass matrix. For long heat treatment times, SAXS was able to reveal the presence of two different particle sizes in the heat treated samples, and to give information about the diameter of the particles involved. Attempting to fit the SAXS data to a reasonable distribution, for example, Log - normal distribution function was not successful, particularly for long heat treatments.
Supporting techniques, namely, magne Lie measux’menLs, electron microscopy and wide angle x-ray diffraction were also used to confirm the presence of- the two particle sizes present in the heat treated glass samples, as well as to trace the mechanism by which the structure of these particles is formed.
