Abstract

During the period 1970 — 1984 the rate of cesarean section increased dramatically from 5.5% of all deliveries to approximately 25% (National Center of Health Statistics, 1985).
It is known that the improvements in the safety of anaesthesia, pre and post operative care, antibiotics and the availability of blood transfusions together with expert obstetric practices are the reasons which have increased the caesarean section rate alt’over the world, furthermore, a previous cesarean section has acquired increasing importance as an indication for delivery by cesarean section in the next pregnancy (Rosen et al., 1981 and Yudkin et al.., 1986).
Nearly half of the rise in the cesarean section rate in the United States between 80 - 85 resulted from repeat cesarean operations (Toffel et al., 1987). Today more than one third of all cesarean operations are performed solely because of a history of previous cesarean (Shiono et al., 1987).
