Abstract

This study was conducted to test the effect of resin surface treatment on
the surface roughness and stain resistance of light cured resin composite.
A total of 180 resin composite specimens were prepared. The specimens
were divided into three main groups, sixty each, according to the type of
resin surface treatment (the first group left untreated using Sof-Lex disk,
second group specimens finished with Sof-Lex disk then coated with resin
surface sealant, third group finished with Sof-Lex then coated with bonding
agent). Each of the previously mentioned three main groups was divided into
three subgroups, twenty each, according to time of storage (immediate, 24
hours, 30 days). Each subgroups divided into smaller subgroups, ten each,
according to aging solutions (distilled water, coffee). Each smaller subgroups
had five specimens measured for their color change using a
spectrophotometer (UV-Shimadzu 3101 PC) and five specimens measured
for their surface roughness using a mechanical profilometer (Talysurf i60).
The results showed that the most stain resistance and the smoothest surface
was achieved with composite specimens coated with resin surface sealant
while untreated composite specimens had the highest value of the mean color
change after 24 hours and 30days storage in different solutions. There was no
significant different in the surface roughness between untreated composite
specimens and resin composite specimens coated with bonding agent after 30
days storage in different solutions.
Within the limitations of this study the following conclusions
were suggested:
1. Resin surface treatment affects on the discoloration and the surface
roughness of the dental resin composite.
2. Coffee and time of storage adversely affect on the discoloration of the
dental resin composite.
3. Resin surface sealant application improves the surface roughness and
color resistant more than adhesive system.
4. There is a direct correlation between surface roughness and color change.
Recommendation:
• The resin surface sealant could be used in resin composite restorations
following finishing and polishing procedures.
• Patients awareness about coffee stains of the resin composites is
recommended.
