Abstract
Hypertension is becoming a public health problem world wide, especially in the developing countries. However little is known about its prevalence in young adults. The present study was conducted in attempts to identify its prevalence, associated risk factors and morbidities among university students in Fayoum University. The study conducted on 3 phases. First phase, cross sectional descriptive study of 954 students, blood pressure was measured for all of them. Second phase, a nested case control study of 139 students. Third phase: a case series for 10 male hypertensive students. Prevalence of hypertension and prehypertension was found to be 5.7% and 47.4% respectively in students aged 17-22 years. Hypertension was significantly associated with age, sex, academic year and faculty. BMI≥25K/m2, FBG >100 and Total cholesterol ≥200, Family history of diabetes and presence of stress were the strongest predictors among hypertensive students.
