Abstract

Copper is one of an essential element for many organism and can be toxic in excess due to pro-oxidant activity of copper ions. Pro-oxidant activity of copper ions caused oxidative damage of important molecules in the cells and leads to many diseases in many biological system. The objective of the present study is to evaluate the antioxidant activity of rosemary ethanolic extract and its ability to reduce the toxic effect of copper on different biological system. The results indicated that, both copper sulfate and copper oxychloride increase the level of lipid peroxidation in sunflower oil, human erythrocytes, yeast cell, and spinach leaf tissues. Also, treatment with copper compounds led to inhibition of yeast growth, hemoglobin leakage from human erythrocytes and elevation of electrolyte leakage from spinach leaf tissues. Rosemary ethanolic extract reduces the lipid peroxidation of sun flower oil, hemoglobin leakage from human erythrocytes, inhibition of yeast cell growth and electrolyte leakage from spinach leaf tissues. The results indicated that rosemary extract inhibit the lipid peroxidation of sunflower oil treated with copper sulfate or copper oxychloride by 84.2% and 50.5% compared to control respectively. Also, rosemary ethanolic extract can prevent hemoglobin leakage from human erythrocytes in a concentration dependent manner. In addiotion the inhibitory effect of copper sulfate or copper oxychloride on thegrowth of yeast cells was prevented by rosemary ethanolic extracin a dose dependent manner. Rosemary ethanolic extract reduceboth lipid peroxidation in plant leaf tissues and electrolyte leakageThis study suggested that rosemary ethanolic extract can be used toreduce oxidative damage of copper in different biological system.
