Abstract

Prevalence of hypertension is high in hemodialysis patients.
Increase of intracellular calcium due to hyperparathyroidism is one
of probable factors for hypertension in hemodialysis patients.
In this study, the relationship between serum parathyroid
hormone (PTH) level and severity of hypertension in hemodialysis
patients was investigated.
This study included 100 patients who have been on regular
HD for at least 3 months. The cases group included 50 hemodialysis
patients with a predialysis systolic blood pressure greater than 140
mm Hg or a diastolic blood pressure greater than 90 mm Hg with or
with out antihypertensive drug use. Participants in the control group
were 50 hemodialysis patients who had lower systolic and diastolic
blood pressure levels and not taking any antihypertensive
medications.
Patients were classified according to PTH level to
– Patients within target level ”150-300 Pg/ml”
– Patients below target level ”below150 pg/ml”
– Patients above target level ” above 300 Pg/ml”
and were also classified based on the stage of hypertension.
Correlations were then performed between PTH levels and
hypertension.
