Abstract

Radiographic evaluation is crucial in patients with sp inal trauma for assessment of osseous and soft tissue structures including the spinal cord. This is especially important when an accurate clinical examination and history are limited because of soft tissue swelling, disturbed consciousness level or associated other organ injuries.
The goal of the radiological work-up is to define the number and exact location of the fractures, to determine if there is any bony retropulsion, canal compromise, cord compression, edema or hematoma and to assess concomitant soft tissue complications as para-vertebral and epidural hematomas.
This study was conducted on 50 patients with spinal trauma; 30 males and 20 females with age ranging between 12 and 75 years. All patients underwent complete history taking and full neurological examination by the neurosurgeons then MRI examination of the spine was done for all patients.
The male to female ratio was 3: 2 and the most affected age was between 21 and 30 years in both sexes. No male affection occurred above the age of 60 years.
Traffic car and motor cycle accidents represented the most common cause of spinal trauma (78%), followed by falling from height (14%).
The most common presentation was back pain (50%) followed by loss of consciousness (44%). Multi-level affection of spinal injuries occurred in 20% of our patients.
