Abstract

Indoor position location techniques are used extensively in military and civilian applications. The major problem with indoor techniques is multipath. This can be overcome through using ultra wideband signals. In this thesis, three indoor position location techniques are investigated. Those techniques are; time of arrival based technique, angle of arrival based technique, and received signal strength based technique. For each of these techniques the following issues were investigated: (1) minimum number of reference nodes required, (2) optimum geometrical arrangement of the reference nodes, (3) error in estimated tag position due to error in measured parameter ( the time of arrival, angle of arrival, or received signal strength), (4) error in estimated tag position due to uncertainty in positions of reference nodes. The time of arrival based technique gives good accuracy for large distances, while received signal strength based technique is better at short distances. The angle of arrival based technique needs less number of reference nodes. .
