Abstract

CSOM is remainning a persistent health care problem, because of the rarity of informations available from laboratory and clinical studies on every aspect of the disease and its attendant morbidity and potential life threatenning complications, despite remarkable advances in medical and surgical management, which leave the clinician without a standardized management plan.
Effective treatment of CSOM depends on knowledge of the infecting organism and can be achieved either by medical or surgical treatment. Medical treatment consists of systemic antibiotics and / or local ear drops, while surgical treatment indicated when conservative treatment fails or when complications are present or threatenning.
Choice of the appropriate antibiotics for the medical treatment is of great importance because a large number of organisms have been implicated as the cause of CSOM.
The aim of our work is to recognize the aerobic and anaerobic
bacteria involved in the exudate of the external auditory canal and
the mastoid cortex during operation in patients with CSOM as well as determination of their in-vitro antimicrobial susceptibility.
