Abstract I have reported a green, highly efficient synthesis of 2-arylbenzothiazoles using glycerol without catalyst at ambient temperature, thus, with the initial aim of optimising the experimental conditions, I explored the reaction of 2-amino thiophenol I and benzaldehyde IIa using glycerol as a solvent at ambient temperature which affords the desired 2-phenyl-1,3-benzothiazole IIIa in excellent yield. I explored the reaction with different aromatic and hetero aromatic aldehydes IIb-k, also with substituted 2-amino-thiophenol, and 2-aryl-1,3-benzothiazoles III b-k were obtained in excellent yields. In order to study the effect of solvent on the reaction rate I carried out the same reaction in different solvents, such as H2O, acetone and CHCl3, under the same reaction conditions and the reactants were recovered almost unchanged. I am also studied the effect of the aromatic aldehyde substituents on the reaction rate and the overall yield. A proposed mechanism to account for the formation of the reaction product was postulated. |
