Abstract

The aim of this study was to identify changes in the soil characteristics of EI-Salheya area as a result of its
r reclamation and cutt LvatLon , Eight profiles representing virgin uncultivated unreclaimed soils (adjacent to or near by
cultivated fields) were compared to twelve profiles selected
in cultivated fields. Characterization of soils: Soil are fluvial Nile River terraces with almost
homogenous deep profile having texture ranging from sands to loams. Crop were irrigated by flooding or by centre-pivot
sprinkler systems using Niie water or well water. NoncUltivated
soils were desert sands having sparse vegetation.
Soils underwent changes in their properties as a results
of their reclamation and cUltivations; as shown in the table
Texture:
Texture changed towards fineness as clay contents, which
did not exceed 9% in virgin soils, were increased to contents
reaching up to 25%’ in reclaimed soils. A reverse trend
occurred to sand, which decreased upon reclamation.
