Abstract The importance of physical activity, fitness and exercise spans a spectrum of public health issues ranging from disease prevention and enhancement of a healthy life style for all age groups to the maintenance of an independent lifestyle in the later stages of life. The importance of physical activity in reducing morbidity and mortality from chronic diseases has been well established. The study was conducted in Ismailia City to design, implement and measure the effectiveness of a program for promoting physical activity among secondary school students. The objectives of the study were design a program for promoting physical activity among secondary schools’ students in Ismailia city, implement a program for promoting physical activity among secondary schools’ students in Ismailia city, identify related factors affecting physical activity participation, increase prevalence of physical activity participation among secondary school students in Ismaillia city, identify factors affecting compliance of the participants’ students in the program, identify factors affecting compliance of the program’ providers, find out difficulties in the practical implementation of the program, and secondary objective was measure the changes in physical fitness after the implementation of the physical activity program among schools students. Secondary school students were selected usmg stratified cluster random sample. The data were collected by using a questionnaire was designed to collect information about related factors affecting physical 175 activities practicing such as age, gender, income, residence, type of education, level of education and certain health conditions. Participants’ compliance questionnaire was designed for evaluation of the process of promoting physical activity program. The collected data were statistically analyzed by a personal computer with an appropriate statistical package. The results of the study revealed the followings: Most of the students were in the age 15 in the general school (41.8%). In private school more than one third of students in age 14 (35.4%). Most of the students in general school with moderate crowding index (44.5%), while in private school the majority of students with low crowding index (57.3%). More than half of the students in general school with moderate income index (54.8%) and low income index (35.4%), while in private school the majority of students with high income index (80.3%). Most of the students in general and private have ability to practice physical activity (87.8% and 90.4% respectively). More than half of the students in general school (54.4%) have time to practice physical activity. About two thirds of the students in private schools (64.0%) have time to practice physical activity. More than one half of the students in private schools (57.39%) practice less than 30 minutes and 40.1 % in general school. 176 ) Most of the students in general and private know the benefits of physical activity (91.6% and 87.1 % respectively). 64.3% of the students in general schools have friend practice physical activity, and 46.6% of students in private schools. 65.4% of the students in general schools have encouragement of parents on practice physical activity, and 48.9% of students in private schools. About half of the students in general schools (50.6%) have place to practice physical activity, and more than half of students (51:7%) in private schools. About one third of the students in general schools (32.3%) have instrument to practice physical activity, and 14% % of students in private schools. Most of the students in general schools (71.5%) walk on go to school, most of the students in private schools (62.4%) not walk on go to school. Prevalence of physical activity participation in pre program was 63.84% and in post program it was 100%. The percent of students with high participation was 9.38% in pre program and it was 64.3% in post program. The high compliance present in the males more than females (55.2%, 44.8% respectively). The low compliance present in the females 177 ) more than males it about two thirds of females (67.5%). The high compliance present more in the age 15 and 14 (36.3%, 29.2% respectively). In high compliance the income index was high in the majority of students (41.3%). The high compliance present in the students with mother education secondary and university (45.6%,44.1 % respectively). In the high compliance the majority of the students (98.9%) were non smokers, students without diseases (98.6%), and in the majority of students with the ability to perform physical exercise (95.7%). The high compliance present in the majority of students who having time to practice physical activity (70.1 ~/o) more than the students who not have time practice physical activity. And in the majority of students who enjoy in practicing physical activity (90.7%). The high compliance present in the majority of students like education classroom (90.7%). And in the majority of students know the benefits physical activity (94.3%). The high compliance present in the majority of students their friends practice physical activity (61.2%), and in more than two thirds of students their parents encourage them on physical activity (67.3%). The high compliance present in the majority of students have a place for practice of physical activity (60.5%). In high compliance the majority of students have instrument for practice of physical activity (71.8%). 178 The high compliance present in more than one half of students (53.7%) who walk on go to school, and in the majority of students (53.7%) who have encouragement of physical activity. Students were males, not smoking, not suffering from diseases, practice of physical activity, having encouragement from friends are associated with an increased compliance. |
