Abstract

This study was carried out to investigate the comparative toxicodynamic, pharmacodynamic and clinical effects of Xylazine and Medetomidine on some animals. Xylazine (4 mg/kg) and Medetomidine (100 μg/kg) were used to study analgesic (central & peripheral), antipyretic, hypothermic and anti-inflammatory activities in mice and rats, respectively. Effect on rats’ sleeping time was also investigated. Dogs were used to study the effects of Xylazine (2.2 mg/kg) and Medetomidine (40 μg/kg) on heart rate, respiratory rate, blood pressure, body temperature and Electrocardiographic readings. Effects of Xylazine (0.04 mg/ml) and Medetomidine (20 ng/ml) on isolated rabbit’s intestine, female rat’s uterus and toad’s gastrocnemius muscle were also studied. Complete blood count and analysis of some serum biochemical parameters have been carried out using rats injected with Xylazine (4 mg/kg) and Medetomidine (100 μg/kg). Results revealed that both drugs have analgesic (central & peripheral), antipyretic, hypothermic and anti-inflammatory power. They also increased the sleeping time upon thiopental sodium injection in treated rats. Both of them significantly decreased heart rate, respiratory rate, and induced transient hypertension. They also induced arrhythmogenic effects on heart of treated dogs. Xylazine and Medetomidine induced transient hyperglycemic effects in serum of treated rats and trivial change on other heamto -biochemical values.
