Abstract

Supracondylar femoral fractures are these fractures that involve the distal nine centimeters of the femur; they represent a real challenge as regards the method of treatment.
In this study, thirty patients with supracondylar femur fracture types A, B or C, were surgically treated and followed up. The patients were divided into two groups according to the method of surgical treatment: group I included fifteen patients treated by the locked supracondylar plate, and group II include fifteen patients treated by the condylar buttress plate.
The age incidence ranged from 18 years to 80 years, with a mean of 42.8 years, nineteen of them were females (63.3%) and eleven were males (36.7%). Nineteen of patients (63.3%) were fractured due to severe trauma, nine of them (30%) due to road traffic accident and ten patients (33.3%) were injured due to fall from height. Eleven patients sustained mild to moderate trauma (36.7%).There was one case with type A1 fracture, four cases with type A2 fractures, eleven cases with type A3 fractures, three cases with type B1 fracture, three cases with type B2 fractures, three cases with type C1 fractures and five cases with type C2 fracture.
All patients were followed up from April 2009 to April 2010 and studied both clinically and radiologically according to the functional evaluation scale developed by Oleurd et al for distal femur fractures as regards: pain, walking capacity, joint movement, anatomy, roentgenogram, and work capacity.
In group I: two patients had excellent results (13.3%), nine patients good results (60%), three patients fair results (20%), and one patients gave poor results (6.7%).
In group II: five patients had excellent results (33.3%), seven patients had good results (46.7%), and three patient gave poor result (20.%).
The older the age of the patient the less favorable the result. Also it was found that the earlier the surgery is done, the better the result.
The complications encountered in this study were knee joint stiffness, varus malalignment, delayed and nonunion and wound infection.
