Abstract

structural damage to pavement and airfield
Expansive soils are characterised by swelling on wetting, shrinkage and cracking on drying. Volume changes in expansive clay are known to depend on the type and amount of clay mineral. These soils are hard in dry state and possess a high shear strength which decreases rapidly with the increase of water content.
The swelling phenomenon causes building foundation, semelles, construction.
Expansive soils are existed allover the world in various countries as Australia, Canada, Poland, India, South Africa, United state of America and many other countries. Here in Egypt this soil is found in Kom-Ombo, Esna, Assiut, New-Valley, El-Mokattam, Madinat-Nasr and El-Esmaelia. Many techniques have been used to reduce or
control heave, tion.
The main purpose of this research is to modify the soil and to reduce or eliminate the volume change characteristics. To achieve these requirements, lime and lime with one percent of sodium chloride are used as soil stabilizers.
