Abstract

Cartridge cases made of Brass; (Cu, Zn, Si) alloy encountered a serious problem at the final stages of production. This problem had an adverse effect on productivity and consequently on securing supplies of this strategic product. Several factors could lead to such problem, some might be related to material properties; the others may be associated to equipment, forming tools and operation process parameters. The current research is dealing with effect of intermediate annealing on the behavior of cartridge case brass during multi-ironing and tapering stage. This research aims to find the causes of these cracks during the final stages of manufacturing and to solve this problem and try to prevent it from happening again or to be within the authorized percentage of the rejected internationally.
Results of experimental work emphasized that equipment, tooling, forming variables (amount and rate of deformation, number of draws, punch and die dimensions, ... ) did not contribute to such problem. Intermediate annealing process might play role to that problem and hence, work was focused to study effect of intermediate annealing on the behavior of cartridge case during tapering operation where the cracking problem appeared.
F our different annealing processes were applied before tapering using induction heating at 40, 55, 65 and 72 seconds.
