Abstract

In Egypt, the water pollution problem has been considered, in recent years to be of great importance because of the need to satisfy the increasing demand for water for various uses. The removal of organic contaminants from aqueous solution is very important from the environmental point of view.
Dyes are discharge from textile plants and have an adverse effect on the surface water. Dyestuffs also react with chlorine added to water as a disinfectant, there by producing more harmful products.
In the present study, the adsorption of three dyes (Methylene Blue, maxilion Red and Astrazon yellow) onto Fuller’s Earth and Filter Cake have been investigated.
Spent bleaching Earth (Fuller’s earth) from (The Nile Cotton Ginning Company, EI-Minia, Egypt) was treated with dichloroeathane as solvent for removal entrapped oil ,(5 : 100) of solid to liquid ratio at temperature 90°C for time = 4 hours in order to remove 98% of oil (Esmeal, 1999).
Filter cake from Abou- Korkas Sugar Mill ,EI-Minia , Egypt, was washed thorough by water to remove any sugar in the cake .
The maximum adsorption capacities of (Methylene Blue, maxilion Red and Astrazon yellow)onto fuller’s earth are found to be(86.71,113.6 and146.23 mg/g) The maximum adsorption capacities of (Methylene Blue, maxilion Red and Astrazon yellow)onto filter cake are found to be(68.04 ,90.3 and 131.07 mg/g)
The experimental results have been fitted with Langmuir and Freundlich models.
A series of contact time experimental have been undertaken by two methods:
-- First, the mechanical agitated batch vessel adsorber :
Different variables were studied, namely, agitation speed, initial dye concentration and mass of adsorbents.
