Abstract

Traumatic dental injuries (TDIs) frequently occur in society and may occur at home. The prognosis of traumatized teeth especially permanent teeth avulsion depends on prompt and appropriate treatment which may frequently be the responsibility of lay people available at the accident site while the importance of immediate treatment of primary teeth differs from that of permanent. Therefore this study was carried out to assessing the level of knowledge and attitudes of a sample of Egyptian parents with regards to immediate management of dental trauma, as well as to test the influence of socioeconomic and other related variables such as age, sex, previous education and presence of past history of trauma management on their response. A total of 1500 Egyptian parents attending a Pediatric Dental Clinic formed the sample of the study. A questionnaire comprising 12 questions was used. The tabulated data were statistically analyzed using the Chi-square test. Markedly low knowledge levels were noted which was evidenced in their knowledge about tooth type, storage of fractured segment, management of the child if fall without hurting or in case of loss of conciseness as well as possibility of replant the avulsed permanent/deciduous teeth, methods of cleaning and handling the avulsed tooth before replantation, extra-alveolar time and storage medium for the avulsed tooth. The survey showed that the knowledge of young aged parent, non educated parent and those with low socioeconomic level were the worst. Presence of previous trauma experience affects positively on respondent answers. The results of part III (attitude part) of the survey was positive indicating that the respondents were not satisfied with their level of knowledge or the proper action of trauma management, and that they were keen to learn more about dental trauma management. Therefore, educational programs would be necessary to improve awareness of the immediate management of traumatized teeth.
