Abstract

This study had been done in the surgical operation unit in EIIMinia university hospital during the period between April 2003 to June 2005.
In this study, the effect of three inhalational agents; halothane .isoflurane, and sevoflurane on the liver was compared with each other and with regional anesthesia in adult patients undergoing ophthalmic surgery.
Eighty patients were included in this study. Their ages ranged between 18 and 73 years and they were assigned randomly to receive either halothane, isoflurane or sevoflurane in the first 3 groups while the fourth group received local anesthesia .
. The following liver function tests were done preoperatively: 1-total and direct serum billirubin.
2-Liver enzymes.
-Aspartate transaminase (AL T).
-Alanine transaminase (AST).
-Alkaline phosphatase (ALP).
-Creatine kinase (CK).
Any patient exceeded the normal values of these enzymes was excluded from the study. In addition routine physical examination and laboratory investigations were done preoperatively.
The patients in the four groups of the study were given the following:
-20 microgram/kilogram atropine
-5 milligram midazolam
’The patients in the three inhalational groups were given 1 mg/kg fentanil .
Endotracheal intubation was facilitated by administration of 0.5 mg/kg atracurium intravenously. this was followed by giving the patient 1.2-1.4 MAC of the inhalational agent according to the group.
