Abstract
The first chapter deals with introduction to Chay Yew and his biography .Chay Yew is one of the most famous Chinese American playwrights \\’ho reflects the dilemmas of identity through his writing. The second chapter analyzes John lee’s lost identity and the rejection he feels within the framework referred to in the introduction. John Lee, a 19-years old gay Chinese man surrounded by racism and homophobia confesses to shooting his lover in a public lavatory. Chapter three revolves around the theme of alienation of identity. In this play, Yew shows the fragmentized identity of both ”Oscar” and” Ming ”. They are Asian American and lovers beginning the play with the familiar discussion of who is more ”Asian” and what that means for their relationship. Oscar tells Ming ” The only thing that truly binds us together is being Chinese” to which Ming replies” The other thing that truly pits us against each other is being Chinese ”. The play takes a less familiar turn when it is revealed that Oscar is hive-positive. As they grow apart, despite both of them wishing to remain together, both realize that their common ethnic background had a more significant role in defining the relationship.
Chapter four deals with a play from a collection entitled ”the hyphenated American.” Through the play, we know that from the Los Angeles Negro Alley Massacre and the plight of Filipino migrant ’Norks, to the internment of Japanese Americans and the brutal murder of Vincent Chin, immigrant drag queen Miss Visa Denied bares witness to the provocative events that shape Asian American history for the past 160 years. It is said that it is a stirring examination of Asian American experience over 150 years.
