Abstract

The increased number of Internet users made the popular services Television and Telephone to use the Internet as a medium to reach their customers.
Multi-Protocol Label Switching (MPLS) emerged to plays an important role in the next generation networks by providing Quality of Service (QoS) and TE. When MPLS combined with DiffServ it gives good end to end QoS solution. Also MPLS has popular applications as virtual private networks (VPN) and Failure recovery methods such as MPLS fast reroute.
The research problem : There has been significant progress in improving the performance of VoIP and Video over backbone networks by using routing protocols support QoS and TE.
The research aims to study the performance of IP, MPLS, ATM networks when using VoIP and Video applications and optimizing the QoS.
The research concludes: provides brief description of IP and ATM networks and its limitation in real time applications, explains the state-of-art of MPLS architecture, functionality and traffic engineering, explains the multimedia applications, voice and video compression, voice and video codecs, VoIP, and QoS. Introduces virtual private network (VPN), MPLS VPNs and the scalability issues in BGP MPLS VPNs. And provides the computer simulation and results of voice and video applications over IP and MPLS network with different configuration to study the performance, also study the scalability of BGP MPLS VPNs and failure recovery methods using OPNET modeler.
