Abstract

ulmonary tuberculosis is a major cause of morbidity and mortality world wide, resulting in the greatest number of deaths due to any one single infectious agent.
Drug resistance threatens global tuberculosis control efforts.
This study included 180 patients admitted to Abassia chest Hospital. The patients were resistant to at least rifampicin and INH. It was done in the period between July 2006 to December 2009. Their files were analysied and the following items were discussed from the files:
1-The epidemiological data of patients included in the
Study.
2-Tha number of multi drug resistance tuberculous patients with their percentage to all tuberculous patients.
3-Causes and types of drug resistance.
4-Associated co-morbidities.
5-Side effects of treatment.
6-Fate of multi drug resistance tuberculous patients.
7-Patients with surgical interference.
In this study there were 130 males and 50 females. The mean age was 36.8 year.
According to the occupation of the studied group, skilled workers were 60%, specialized workers were23% while housewifes were 17%.
Special habits detected in the studied group were tobacco smoking, drug addiction.
According to type of patients, new cases were 2.7% and retreatment patients were 97.2%.
According to type of resistance, acquired resistance was 69.4% primary resistance was 30.6%.
The most common co-morbidities associated with MDR-TB in the studied group were diabetes; it was 18.3% and chest diseases as chronic obstructive lung disease was 8.9%.
In the studied group pulmonary TB cases were 98.3% and extrapulmonary were 1.7%.
In the studied group resistance to isoniazide and rifampicin were 100%, resistance to streptomycin was 81.1%, and resistance to ethambutol was 75.6%.
In the studied group complications of drug were 88.3% gastritis, 76.7% peripheral polyneuritis, 44.4% hypothyroidism, 61.1% C.N.S manfestations, 23.3% hypokaleamia, 14.4 gout arthritis, 8.3% hepatitis.
In the studied group fate of treatment were 65.0% cured, 21.1% under treatment, 1.7% treatment failure. 9.4% died and 2.2% defaulter, one case has been undergone surgical removal of the affected lobe.
