Abstract

This study included 100 COPD patients with acute respiratory failure who were admitted in El Minia University Hospital ICU and Health Insurance Hospital ICU from October 2007 to October 2008. All patients were examined within 24 hours of admission and all the patients were subjected to the following at the time of admission : History taking, clinical examination, plain chest radiograph P-A view, routine laboratory investigations (CBC, renal function tests, liver function tests and blood sugar), ECG and APACHE II score. Also Pulmonary function tests were done to some patients. to 80 ). Group II (non-survivors): consisted of 58 patients (there age ranging from 47 to 80). The results of this study revealed that: • Over all mortality rate was 58% and mortality rate among mechanically ventilated COPD patients was 100% .Heavy smoking index had a high mortality rate. • APACHE II score on admission and number of preVIOUS exacerbations (4) were higher in group II (non-survivors) than group I (survivors). BMI was lower in group II than group 1.
